TSS offers a wide range of events to help our scholars develop academically and professionally. We have organized LinkedIn workshops, and panels that allow students to network with distinguished professors and faculty. We've also invited many successful professionals to speak about their careers, including the CEO of Cappello Group and the CFO of SpaceX. Below are some of our past events.

Book Exchange

Looking for a great new read or a book buddy? TSS’s Book Exchange was an opportunity to receive another student or faculty member’s favorite book and connect with them through LinkedIn. All members had to do was drop a book of theirs in one of our book boxes and we made sure that members received a new book back!

FALL 2021

Free Headshots

TSS provided free headshots for members to use for their LinkedIn profile or future job applications! Pictures were taken at Mudd Hall of Philosophy.

Journal Club

For members looking to learn about current developments in their field and have a thoughtful conversation with students that share their academic interests, we hosted Journal Club! This was a great opportunity to meet with fellow students to discuss research articles from recent issues of a journal of their choice.

Coffee Chat with Dr. Yolanda Gil

Members attended the first coffee chat virtually with Dr. Yolanda Gil, a Research Professor of Computer Science and Spatial Sciences and Principal Scientist at USC Information Sciences Institute. Students usually find these chats very helpful in discovering research opportunities, learning more about campus programs and even finding mentors!

Career Conversations

TSS held the first in a series of workshops designed to help students cultivate skillsets for future careers! The first session was for students interested in research-oriented careers either in industry or academic institutions. Members heard upperclassmen share their insights on developing analytical skills for reviewing research publications.

Pre-Med Panel

Members joined us virtually for a conversation with upperclassmen and recent alumni sharing their advice and insight into navigating the pre-med track and medical school application process.

Coffee Chat #1 – Professor Lamy

Members had their first TSS Virtual Coffee Chat of the year! Coffee chats are opportunities to engage in conversation with professors on any topic you wish, including their research, current events, information about classes they teach, and much more. Students have often found these chats incredibly beneficial to identify a research opportunity, learn more about other programs on campus, or even find a long-lasting mentor! Professor Lamy spoke with students about his expertise in International Relations, Environmental Studies, and Spatial Sciences. Learn more about him here. We capped the event at 15 people, and coffee chats will function as casual group conversations rather than formal presentations.
